Why him?

“You really hurt my feelings, so i
bought your company.” ~ Laird

“Why him?” is a comedy movie that aired in 2016 and was directed by John Hamburg. The story was written by Jonah Hill, John Hamburg and Ian Helfer. Starring James Franco, Bryan Cranston, Zoey Deutch, Megan Mullally, Griffin Gluck and Keegan-Michael Key and Kaley Cuoco in a surprise role.

Stephanie (Zoey Deutch) is a Stanford student and Ned’s (Bryan Cranston) daughter. On his 55th birthday Ned find’s out (in the most NOT expecting way) about his daughter’s relationship. Ned seems to be a classic overprotective father figure, who can’t accept that his little daughter isn’t so little any more and get’s a little frustrated and worried when he learns that his daughter has a “secret” boyfriend.  After the “incident” in Ned’s birthday party, his daughter invites them to meet him (in a more appropriate way this time) and spend the holidays together. Laird ( James Franco) is a CEO of a video gaming company who seems to be an over enthusiastic person, who often tends to invade other people’s personal space and sometimes overreacts in order to be accepted by others. But things don’t go so well between Laird and Ned, although Laird is really trying to impress his girlfriend’s family. Will Laird manage to reconcile with Ned or is it gonna torn their relationship apart?
Our opinion about the movie…
We could say that, beyond the humoristic parts, we also distinguish a realism in the movie. Parent’s suspense about their children’s future and their difficulty in admitting, that they have grown up and it’s time for them to spread their wings and leave the family nest, is something that the viewer can identify with. Not only that but we also witness the “special” relationship between father and daughter ( corresponding mother - son relationship) and how threaten the first one is from the existence of his daughter’s partner. From what is worth we found this movie hilarious with plenty of touching moments.
